ETH Funding Rate: How to Read Ethereum Perpetual Funding

Ethereum (ETH) funding rate is one of the most watched derivatives metrics in crypto. It shows whether traders holding ETH perpetual futures are paying or receiving funding during each settlement interval.

Why ETH funding matters

ETH often attracts heavy leverage. When funding becomes extreme, it can reveal crowded positioning. Positive funding may show strong long demand; negative funding may show aggressive short demand.

How to interpret ETH funding

Do not read the number alone. Compare it with price structure, volume, open interest, exchange spreads and recent market news. A high funding rate in a strong uptrend can persist, while high funding during a failed breakout can become risky.

Questions to ask

  • Is ETH funding high compared with recent levels?
  • Is the rate similar on Binance, Bybit and OKX?
  • Is open interest rising with price or against price?
  • Are liquidations starting to cluster on one side?
