Understand Kraken perpetual futures funding: payment direction, contract units, and what must be checked before comparing rates.
Kraken funding: what this page provides
This is an educational reference, not a live Kraken funding table. No current Kraken rate, coverage count, or refresh schedule is asserted here. For contract-specific data, consult the official Kraken resources below.
Payment direction and units
Funding transfers value between long and short positions. Positive funding means longs pay shorts; negative funding means shorts pay longs. A funding cash amount is not automatically a percentage rate: the contract specification and quote convention determine the conversion.
Before converting any API field, establish whether it is a cash amount, a decimal rate, a percentage, or a prediction. Confirm the contract identifier, collateral and settlement convention, notional definition, funding interval, and timestamp. Do not assume every Kraken contract uses an 8-hour interval or the same unit.
Comparing funding consistently
When a percentage rate and its interval are established, simple annualization uses that percentage multiplied by 24 divided by the interval in hours, then by 365. For an illustrative 0.01% per 8 hours, this gives 10.95% simple APR. This example is not a current Kraken quote and does not imply that any Kraken contract uses that interval.
Funding varies. An annualized snapshot is not a return forecast and excludes price changes, execution costs, borrowing, liquidation, and exchange risk. Only compare instruments after normalizing their units and intervals.
