Funding Rates as a Sentiment Indicator
Funding rates are one of the most powerful sentiment indicators in crypto. They show where traders are positioned—and where they’re likely to get squeezed. Learning to read funding rates gives you a unique edge over traders who only look at price charts.
Interpreting Funding Rate Extremes
- Funding > 0.2%: Extremely bullish. Reversal risk is high.
- Funding 0.05-0.2%: Bullish but sustainable. Continue normally.
- Funding -0.05 to 0.05%: Neutral. Market in equilibrium.
- Funding -0.05 to -0.2%: Bearish but sustainable.
- Funding < -0.2%: Extremely bearish. Bounce likely.
Funding Rate Divergence Between Exchanges
When Kraken shows 0.5% funding while Binance shows 0.05%, something unusual is happening on Kraken. Possible causes:
- Large trader positioning on Kraken specifically
- Liquidity issues on one exchange
- Upcoming announcement or event affecting one exchange
Practical Sentiment Strategy
Step 1: Check funding rates across all major exchanges daily
Step 2: Note when funding diverges more than 0.15% between exchanges
Step 3: Use extreme readings (>0.3%) as contrarian entry signals
Step 4: Combine with on-chain data for higher-confidence signals
