What is a Funding Rate Heatmap?
A funding rate heatmap is a visual representation of funding rates across different exchanges and assets. It uses color coding to show which assets have positive funding (red/hot) versus negative funding (blue/cold), making it easy to spot arbitrage opportunities at a glance.
How to Read a Funding Rate Heatmap
- Red/Hot colors: Positive funding rates (longs pay shorts)
- Blue/Cold colors: Negative funding rates (shorts pay longs)
- Darker colors: More extreme funding rates
- Lighter colors: Funding rates near zero
Using the Heatmap for Arbitrage
When you see a dark red cell (high positive funding) next to a blue cell (negative funding) for the same asset across different exchanges, that’s an arbitrage opportunity.
Example: If Binance shows 0.15% funding (red) and Kraken shows -0.05% funding (blue) for XRP, the spread is 0.20%. Go long on Binance, short on Kraken, and collect from both funding payments.

Unlike price charts that show historical prices, a funding rate heatmap reveals trader positioning and sentiment. When everyone is long, funding rates spike—and so does the risk of a squeeze. The heatmap helps you see this before it happens.
