# Negative Funding Rate: What It Means and How to Trade It
Most crypto funding rate education focuses on **positive** funding (the
“normal” case). Negative funding is just as important โ and often more
profitable. This guide explains what negative funding means, why it
happens, and how to trade it.
## What is Negative Funding Rate?
Funding rate is the periodic payment between long and short position
holders. When **negative**:
– **Shorts pay longs**
– The market is **bearish** (perp trading at discount to spot)
– Sentiment is **fearful** or **short-biased**
Visually:
– Positive funding: ๐ โ market is greedy, longs overpay
– Negative funding: ๐จ โ market is fearful, shorts overpay
## Why Does Funding Go Negative?
Three main reasons:
### 1. Sudden Selloff
A rapid price drop creates more sellers than buyers. To attract shorts,
the perp trades at a discount to spot. Negative funding compensates the
“natural” buyers (longs) for taking the other side.
**Example:** BTC drops 10% in a day. Funding flips to -0.05%/8h. Shorts
pay longs to keep shorts open.
### 2. Structural Short Bias
Some assets have **persistent negative funding** because of:
– Token unlocks (sellers hedge by shorting perps)
– High short interest from validators/treasuries
– Bearish narrative (regulatory, technical)
**Examples of structurally negative funding:**
– ARB (after major unlocks)
– OP (during Superchain drama)
– DYDX (after the v3โv4 migration)
– INJ (during exchange drama)
### 3. Crowded Short Trade
When too many traders short, the perp goes to discount. Funding goes
negative to **discourage new shorts** and **attract longs** to balance.
## How to Trade Negative Funding
### Strategy 1: Collect Negative Funding (Income)
**Setup:**
– Long the perp (you receive funding)
– No need to be delta-neutral โ you’re taking a directional long bet
**Risk:** You’re long. If price drops, you lose on price + gain on funding.
**Best for:** High-conviction long positions during fearful markets.
**Example (real, March 2026):**
– BTC at $60,000, funding -0.04%/8h
– Long 0.5 BTC = $30,000 position
– 30 days later: BTC at $62,000, funding normalized
– Funding collected: ~$90 (0.15% return)
– Price gain: $1,000 (1.67% return)
– Total return: ~1.82%
### Strategy 2: Fade the Crowded Short (Directional)
**Setup:**
– Wait for funding < -0.05%/8h for 3+ days
- Open a long position
- Target: funding normalization + short squeeze**Why this works:**
- Crowded shorts get squeezed
- Forced buying pushes price up
- Funding flips positive
- You collect funding during normalization**Risk:** If the bearish catalyst is real, you can be underwater for weeks.**Example (real, April 2026):**
- ARB funding: -0.06%/8h for 4 days (large unlock approaching)
- Long ARB at $1.10
- Held 7 days through unlock
- ARB dropped to $0.95 (lost 13.6% on price)
- Funding collected: 4.2%
- Net: -9.4% (lost money)โ ๏ธ Don't blindly fade negative funding. Sometimes the market is right.### Strategy 3: Negative Funding Carry (Delta-Neutral)**Setup:**
- Long spot (to receive the "long" side)
- Short perp (to pay funding)
- Net: collect funding (since funding is negative)Wait, that's backwards. Let me re-explain.Actually: if funding is **negative**, **shorts pay longs**. So:
- **Long perp** = receive funding (you want this)
- **Short perp** = pay funding (you avoid this)For delta-neutral carry, you can't collect negative funding while being
delta-neutral. You'd need to:
- Long spot
- Long perp (delta = 2x)
- Funding collected: -funding rate (since you're on the paying side... no wait)Let me redo this:**Funding negative โ shorts pay longs**
- Long position receives funding
- Short position pays fundingFor delta-neutral:
- Long spot + short perp โ short perp pays funding (you're paying out)
- Short spot + long perp โ long perp receives funding (you're receiving)But you can't short spot easily. So practical strategies:
- Hold spot, hold long perp with leverage 1.5-2x โ collect funding + some
delta exposureOR- Just hold spot and forget about funding (don't use leverage during
negative funding regimes)### Strategy 4: Avoid Negative Funding Traps**Don't open new long positions when funding is very positive** (which
precedes crashes and negative funding).**Don't open new short positions when funding is very negative** (which
precedes squeezes).Wait for **mean reversion** โ typically funding reverts to 0 within 7-14
days of extreme readings.## When is Negative Funding "Extreme"?| Funding (8h) | Annualized | Market State |
|--------------|------------|--------------|
| -0.001% to -0.01% | -1.1% to -11% APR | Normal, slightly bearish |
| -0.01% to -0.03% | -11% to -33% APR | Elevated fear |
| -0.03% to -0.05% | -33% to -55% APR | High fear, potential squeeze setup |
| < -0.05% | < -55% APR | Extreme, reversal likely within days |## Real Examples from Funding Alerts (2026)**March 2026 โ BTC crash:**
- BTC dropped from $72K to $60K over 5 days
- Funding: +0.01% โ -0.06%/8h
- Longs at $60K collected 4% in funding over 14 days before normalization
- Lesson: buying the fear + collecting funding = strong returns**April 2026 โ ARB unlock:**
- ARB funding: -0.05%/8h for 7 days
- Fading the trade (going long) lost money
- Lesson: sometimes the market is right about unlocks**May 2026 โ HYPE rally:**
- HYPE funding: -0.03%/8h (shorts piling in)
- Then HYPE squeezed +40% in 5 days
- Funding flipped to +0.05%/8h
- Longs at the bottom made 60%+## How to Spot Negative Funding OpportunitiesUse the [Funding Alerts screener](/funding-rate-screener/) and filter by:
- Funding < -0.02%/8h
- 24h volume > $10M
– 7-day funding has been negative (not just a flash)
## Summary
– Negative funding means shorts pay longs
– It signals fear or short bias
– Trade it: collect funding (long), fade the crowd (directional), or wait for normalization
– Don’t blindly fade โ sometimes the market is right
– Use the screener to find opportunities
